How is dental services funded in Australia?

Medicare

NO Medicare for general dental (only hospital dental for emergencies). Child Dental Benefits Schedule: up to $1,095 over 2 years for eligible children aged 0-17.

Private health insurance

Private health insurance extras cover 50-80% of basic dental (check-ups, fillings, cleaning) up to an annual limit. Major dental (crowns, implants, orthodontics) requires higher extras cover with a 12-month waiting period.

When paying privately for dental services makes sense

All general dental is private in Australia

Unlike the UK NHS, there is no public dental system in Australia for adults. All general dental treatment is out-of-pocket or through private health insurance extras cover.

You need major dental work

Crowns ($1,200-2,000), implants ($3,000-6,500), and orthodontics ($5,000-9,000) are significant costs. Compare quotes from multiple dentists and check your insurance annual limits.

Your child may be eligible for CDBS

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule covers up to $1,095 over 2 years for eligible children. Check eligibility via MyGov or call the CDBS hotline.

You want to use your insurance benefits

Use your annual extras limit before December 31 each year. Most policies reset annually. Preventive check-ups use a small portion of your limit.

What to check before booking

  • Ask for a written treatment plan and quote before major work
  • Check your health insurance annual limit and waiting periods
  • Compare prices — dental fees vary significantly between practices
  • Ask about payment plans for major treatments
